When someone is on the BOD of company they have a vested interest in making
the company profitable. One cannot serve the interests of an infant formula
company and breastfeeding at the same time. There is a biblical saying about
serving two masters. Wyeth has a major investment in transgenic farming
(pharming is the correct term). They are also the company that brought us
the rotavirus vaccine that had to be recalled. It was recalled because it
had caused intussusception in a number of the young children who had been
vaccinated. Rotavirus is one of the viruses that researchers absolutely know
is inactivated by human milk in vitro and in vivo. Research for this
particular vaccine was partially funded by the NIH. Money was spent to
promote something that would be better spent promoting breastfeeding. Worst
yet, this vaccine itself was life-threatening!!

Being on the Board of Directors for an infant formula company is a far worse
situation than being a spokesman in an advertising campaign. Wyeth has an
agenda and that is the acceptance of genetically engineered infant formula.
Their agenda is that they will be improving formula and making its components
identical to human milk. And as long as the public and breastfeeding
advocates believe that the improvement of infant formula is a necessary
"good" then you will never see breastfeeding be other than the token
choice...Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
