Even sophisticated people really, in their secret hearts, believe in the
evil eye. Putting a curse on someone's baby is bad. People will defend
themselves against bad news (health risks of formula) by using denial (the
threat isn't real) or projection (you are a witch) or resentment (stop
trying to control me). None of these 'solutions' helps anyone to the truth.
The truth for some individual women is that they really can't make milk (due
to PCOS, breast surgery, prior abuse, or such awful social support that bfg
was doomed from the start). 'Cursing' their babies is going to feel like
punishment on top of their disappointment. I think this is what doctors and
other HCPs mean and feel when they say they want to avoid making people feel
guilty. Our attitudes and words when we deal with issues such as eventual
health outcomes must be examined. As a profession we are plenty smart enough
to explore these issues and refine our communication skills so that we can
share information accurately without seeming to be cursing babies. And we
really do have to remember that Lactnet is a public forum. If we think that
letting our hair down here is private, we are kidding ourselves.
