Bonnie: I've never seen actual published research on the relationship
between early circumcision and breastfeeding problems, and if anyone has,
I would love to see it. But even in the absence of such research, it
really irks me that your observation is being questioned, and it saddens
me that you have to wonder whether you are right or wrong. An observation
is just that: an observation. If you have seen this happen, that should
not be questioned. A well conducted study would be needed to confirm or
rule out that what you have observed is a causal relationship. Until such
time as that is done, I would hope that a physician would have enough
respect for you as a professional and enough concern about the potential
risk to the breastfeeding relationship and health of his patients that he
would err on the side of caution, i.e. postpone the circumcision until
breastfeeding is better established. I hope that the many Lactnetters who
have observed what you have will answer you and that perhaps he will be
swayed by the numbers. Unfortunately, as has been stated,
insurance companies tend not to pay for these on an outpatient basis, but
I guess that's another battle. Good luck, Alicia.
By the way, you may quote me in full.
