Usually it's because they must measure In's and Out's (intake and output) and they can't do that when baby is BrFdg. And no, they won't consider doing pre- and post-feed weights. It's too much work.
Result: 2 hours before discharge, they call you urgently to teach baby to breastfeed now! In the meantime, MDs and RNs are trying to give mom last minute discharge instructions; dad and/or gramma is there trying to "pretty-up" baby or feed formula in order to "help" mom.....
Yes, I understand. That's the NICU culture I have experienced. But I have heard it can be different in some hospitals.

Once a baby is almost going home and many times after the persistence of the parent I get called to the Lactation Room in NICU to assist this mom. Without going into details today I was told that beginning today I needed a doctor's order before this babies can begin to breastfeed, even though these babies have been bottle feeding for so long and almost going home, the excuse was to monitor baby's intake..please illuminate me in this long journey of resistance! Is this the norm? I've been here for almost 3 yrs and this is the first I hear of this.

thanks!
