When mom's are returning to work I recommend that at the feeding first thing
in the morning they nurse from one breast and pump the other one (at the same
time if they can manage--most do it right afterward). First the milk level is
higher in the morning due to increased prolactin levels with sleep. Second,
the breast is primed for the pump by the baby Most of the moms have very
little difficulty getting the MER in tune with the pump and get a good
supply. Third, moms tend to think of the breast as a container, so if they
are nursing *all the time* they can't imagine when they should pump so giving
concrete gudelines is helpful.
