Dear Diane and Ted,
I have a son that was exclusively BF for 3+ years. He has a very high IQ but
also has borderline ADD ( I don't really know if you can have "borderline"
ADD as you can't be borderline pregnant either you are or you aren't, but he
doesn't have a REAL bad problem with it). I also have a daughter that has no
detectable learning disabilities (was also BF mega years) but doesn't have
near the obvious intellectual gifts my son does.
I really don't think BF has had anything to do with it other than
if I hadn't BF'd his ADD probably would have been much worse
(due to a combination of better parenting skills(nurturance) and the benefits
directly from BM). The predisposition toward
ADD/Dyslexia/LD is probably inherited (can't site lit right now but I do have
access to articles, if needed email me). So,
I don't think you could take the viewpoint that BF'd kids don't have LD. As
a matter of fact, a really weird observation: In my
original LLL group, the same year my son was born, EVERY child whose mom was
actively involved has had some LD problem in school. This is just too weird
for me! Three cases of dx ADD,
one case of dyslexia, and two cases of what I believe is undx ADD (I know the
kids) but dx LD's. Is it the water we drank or what, like I said TOO Weird.
BTW it wasn't daily association with each other as we had little contact
outside of LLL. Also
leads me to wonder if the type of children we bring up (those that are able
to think on their own) using LLL philosophy is different enough in school
that they are being labeled incorrectly. I did hear a talk by Faye Young at
LLLI conf that did confirm my feelings about our kids being just a bit
different (used to having their feelings listened to and able to express
their opinions freely) and that leading to some unique problems as
teens.(again email me if you want details, I have the tape). Anyway sorry for
the ramble ADD is my soapbox and I have a hard time stepping down from it.
Have a great weekend all,
Ilene
