If the child's urine is pale and not malodourous, there may not be any
imperative to supplement his fluid intake. A twleve month old has a much
larger bladder than a newborn. A 12month old has a survival instinct. If he
was thirsty, surely he would drink from a cup. I'd be surprised if he could
allow himself to become dangerously dehydrated.
Has the mother considered just offering to feed him more frequently while he
learns to take water from a cup? Many mothers teach this skill in the bath.
Breast compressions? The hassle of supplementing at the breast seems a bit
counterintuitive at this point. I understand the mothers' concern but it
sounds like what she needs is reassurance rather than intervention. Does
she know anyone else who is/has breastfeeding an older baby? Is there a LLL
group near her?
