would very much like to find a research paper that discusses this. Isn't
that why iron fortified formula is now so widely recommended? Weren't infants
becoming anemic because of this bleeding? I once mentioned that I heard this at
a conference and it was received with disbelief and shock by my co-workers --
I looked around on the web for a bit but couldn't really find anything to
back it up so have kept quiet about it ever since.

Cow's milk is not recommended before 1 year of age because of microscopic GI
bleeding resulting in anemia. This bleeding has never been associated with
artificial baby milks.
