Hello, again, JP.
You ask if a "b" is a small size, or only an "a". Well, those are
*breast* sizes, and the pump flange is basically for *nipple* sizes, although to
some extent we have to include the *breast* as far as where the "milk sinus"
is located. (OK, I know that recent research shows there's no such thing as a
"milk sinus", but there is still something magical about that spot
approximately 1 inch behind the base of the nipple, and "milk sinus" sounds a whole lot
more professional than "magic spot"!)
Breast size and nipple size are in no way related. I have seen size
"J" cups with very small nipples, and I have seen barely "A" cups with nipples
the size of a wine cork. The only time I ran into trouble was when I came
across a mother with a very wide nipple whose breast was more narrow (not quite
"long and tubular", but closer to that than to "round") and then the slightly
wider cone section of the pump flange was too wide, so then there wasn't any
suction because we didn't get a seal all the way around. But this has been very
rare in my experience.
