When I do a "preview" with a couple I recommend that they do not have a
baby boy circumcised until breastfeeding is well established. I point out
that my Jewish clients' babies have their Bris at 8 days and that there is
little, if any, interruption in the breastfeeding. I suggest that their
little boy will do better if they wait at least a week.

I saw a couple in mid-December and they were expecting twins. The babies
were born at 37 weeks On New Year's Day, weighing 6+ pounds each. They are
in great shape and feeding very well. When asked to sigh the circumcision
approval form they said that they would not be having it done until about a
week. The nurse was aghast and said that their insurance would not pay for
it and, if they were not going to have it done before leaving the hospital,
they would have to sign forms to that effect. Dad said, "I thought that
this was a form of permission. Why do we need to sign one for 'not
permission.'" (Of course, there were no "no permission" forms.) She also
said that she had never heard of any breastfeeding problems following
circumcision in the hospital.

They called their insurance company and, of course, they will cover it. (As
I had assured them that they would.) The babies improve their suckling
technique each day and by 7-8 days baby Ben will be a pro at the breast.

I have had other parents take the same steps with success. One family said
that they were not going to have it done, then after breastfeeding was
going well they called and said that they changed their minds and it was
done with insurance coverage.
