Dear Friends:
Gill Rapley, of Baby-Friendly UK, first opened my eyes to this notion.
Babies are born able to feed; witness the Swedish films (Widstrom,
Righard and Alade and more). They continue feeding at the breast, for as long as
they want.
At some point, they have to start solids. They will start, just like
everything else (teething, walking) when they are mature enough.
Perhaps there are some problems because moms have learned that babies
must be fed solids in some ritualistic fashion and babies, (wiser than we!) are
very angry and upset that suddenly, after years of self-feeding, they aren't
being permitted?
Babies end up feeding themselves solids. So why is there this time of
mistrust between mother and baby? (This gap of mistrust occurs between
breastfeeding and eating solids.)
    warmly,
