My friends mother conceived her as her fifth child at age 45 and breastfed
her in 1940. There is a 20 year spread between her and her oldest surviving
sibling, a sister who is 85. The nurses at the hospital tried to discourage
her mom due to her age and the norms of that time. The lady told them:
that is how I fed my other four, why would I do it any different this time.
Her mom lived to two months of age 90 and outlived 3 husbands. Doctors told
her that women who can easily conceive naturally when older, between 45 and
50, are more likely have the genetic makeup for longevity and so live to
raise those children and well beyond. This seems to fall under the use it
or lose it category. On the other hand, has anyone done a study on women
who chose childlessness and at what age they experience a natural menopause?
