The salteness is a result of weaning, not the cause.
In many circumstances where for whaterver reason milksupply decreses, the relative sodium content rises - as does the antibody content. They seem to be rather freestanding entities in milk regardless of volume. Some mother experience this with the return of their cycle, with pregnancy, with an episode of fever or infection, and when weaning, too. Most children will just go on feeding and feeding more often to raise supply rather than weaning in cases where sodium rise is a result of circumstances outside themselves. If milk gets saltier because they are gradually weining, well, they will continue what they started, won't they.

As a woman's supply decreases it naturally tends to be higher in sodium
content, which is what causes the salty flavor. It does encourge weaning in my
opinion. But if the supply hasn't decreased all that much, there would be less
salty flavor. Besides, some people like their food saltier than others :). This
is totally a 'guestimate on my part.
