I thought Mary Ann Neifert's figures were based on a narrow problem
population too. She threw out the number as "up to 5%" will be incapable of
adequately producing milk on NPR yesterday.  Maybe she thinks that will sound
low to the general audience. She also sounds like she is including women with
problems secondary to breast surgery and injury in this number. What
percentage of American women have breast augmentation and reduction? I
thought that there was a statistic put out by UNICEF or WHO or some other
organization that came up with a figure that was something like one in 5000
women having true primary lactational insufficiency. I will try to find the
source. It was a while ago and is pretty vague. Does this ring a bell with
any one else?
