I have looked after many sensitised mums and babies from blood
incompatibilities who have needed either exchange blood transfusions or
quad/triple/double/single phototherapy lights and all these babies have been
breastfeed either by mum if the baby was capable due to gestational age or
tube feed with expressed breast milk if this was available.
Many babies who have been already sensitised inutero( and according to the
history of this pregnancy)it is a good chance that they will needed an
exchange transfusion.
I am of the opinion that the gut needs to work to help get rid of bilirubin
and it has nothing going into it,it takes longer to work and even if the
baby has an exchange ,it may still require to go under lights as well but
this doesn't mean that the mother can't breast feed,I have seen mothers here
in Australia sitting under the lights with their "sunnies" on breastfeeding
their babies.
One wonders where the medical professionals received their information about
jaundice and breastfeeding if this is what they are advising sensitised
mums.
