Dear Lactnetters,
I just heard a great report on "The World," Public Radio International's
news magazine. Perhaps you can listen to it at www.theworld.org. Click
on today's date in the list of programs, then scroll down to
"Advertisement report."

It seems that the European Union has put together an ad to encourage
people to vote. There are various shots of people making choices, and
the first of them is a baby choosing which breast to latch on to. The
final message of the ad is "You've been voting since you were born.
Don't stop now."

In Britain, there has been a fuss because the breasts and nipples are
visible, so the ad was re-done, to be shown "without the nipples" as the
story reports. I hope this doesn't mean that they omitted the baby
altogether.

Worse yet, in Ireland, no part of the ad is being shown. A government
spokesperson said "The Irish people would wonder if the ad was an
appropriate way to promote democracy." Well, I think we could all debate
that...I mean, choosing between right and left breasts is not much of a
choice. I hope when I vote in November there will be more difference
between the candidates than that! Still, it's a cute idea, and one that
certainly portrays breastfeeding as normal.

The story says that the other EU countries are running the ad with no
problems.

Hats off to the Continent!
