Dear Friends:

Atul Gawande MD has written a fascinating book entitled "Better" about the
effort to perform well. Positive deviants achieve good results going against
the tide. He makes 5 suggestions to become a positive deviant:

1) Ask an unscripted question.

2) Don't complain.

3) Count something.

4) Write something.

5) Change. Look for an opportunity to change.

I liked everything about this book except the chapter on birth, where I felt
that the mother in question ( a physician) was up against the medical view
of birth right from the start, and consequently never had a chance to reach
her goals of unmedicated, spontaneous birth and breastfeeding. I got angry
when the mother is quoted as saying basically "I failed at everything I
wanted (including breastfeeding) but my baby is fine, so none of that
matters." That given, I still recommend this book as inspirational for us.
