Jan, you wrote that there is a large bolus of colostrum in the first 2 hours
postpartum. Do you have the actual numbers of mls these mothers are able to
obtain? Are these moms multips, primrps or both? How many mothers have been
observed in this study?

I don't know what the specifics of the study are -- just that I was told that
it was "in process" -- and that what they were seeing was that moms were
getting anywhere from 15 to 45 ml at that first pumping done at 1 to 2 hours.
Another hospital where they routinely do this, one of our students reported that
they were getting approximately an ounce from moms who pumped in the first
hour or so after birth, compared to drops from moms who waited until 6 to 8 hours
to pump.

My question: we put full term healthy babies to breast within the first hour
after birth. But we wait to have moms pump so they can "rest". Why?
