In response to the LC who is concerned about the FTT baby on the Aug.
2nd digest:

She mentions, in conclusion, that the mom is taking fenugreek for
increasing the milk supply. This is not an herb that I have heard
associated with increase in milk, in fact I have had several friends
with sinus and allergy problems who claim that fenugreek has a very
drying effect. As with some of the precription and over the counter
medications, we do not want nursing moms taking medications that
decrease body secretions or have a drying effect. Lay or
self-diagnosis and use of herbal medicines can be a problem.
Possibly, someone was recommending fenugreek for weaning and the
message got garbled. I, myself, prefer herbal remedies and I often
opt to self-educate and use them, however, I feel we really need to
be cautious about this. I know there are several herbs that are
recommended for increasing milk production, however, I did not opt to
use them when I was nursing my own children, because I didn't feel I
needed them. Herbs can be very powerful, we should not use them
casually. I hope this mom will reinvestigate with whatever reliable sources
she has the use of herbs to increase her milk supply.
