Hello Everyone,
A re-introduction...I've been on Lactnet for years but seldom post. I
have been the Lactation Consultant for the University of Louiville Hospital
since September and after being in a private hospital for 23 years I am
constantly amazed at the difference here. I must say it is invigorating to
be constantly on the front lines of research and evidence based practice.
That said; I returned from a couple of days off to find the NICU
nurses upset with the new requirements for preparing expressed, thawed
breastmilk and adding fortifiers. It seems that an "infection control
expert" from another facility has reccomended gown, glove, hat and mask for
the handling of all breastmilk . This seems not to apply for mixing
formula . The nurses were told that this is to prevent contamination of the
expressed milk because it is "sterile". Having no NICU experience before
coming here I am curious as to your thoughts and policies in other
hospitals. Now, it is an uphill battle daily to promote acceptance of and
support of breastfeeding mothers in "Niculand". I'd hate to add one more
cause for complaint if not absolutely necessary. Thanks in advance for your
input!
