An adoptive mother to be I was talking with last night is contemplating
breastfeeding but is concerned that it may not 'work' because she has
fibrocystic breasts. I told her I thought that this condition was unlikely
to cause any difficulty but promised that I would investigate for her. A
search of the archives did not reveal a great deal. I'd appreciate insights.
The discussion about breastfeeding arose as I was at an informal celebratory
get together for a couple that have just found out they have been matched
with a little girl. Another mother there is in the process of inducing
lactation and was asking questions about hand expressing. I ended up
upstairs in the bedroom with the inducing lactation adoptive mother, the
adoptive mother to be whose matching we were celebrating and who will be
starting inducing lactation this week and the adoptive mother to be with the
fibrocystic breasts who just got hooked into the conversation about
breastfeeding and wondered if it could work for her doing a demonstration of
hand expressing. Another mother came up to watch because she was just amazed
that there could be milk in there and that it comes out. All in all it was a
quite hilarious time but encouraging for the mums. I think it makes it real
to see the milk. I have such admiration for these women who have a go given
that health care professionals have either laughed at them or treated them
as if they were crazy or warped for wanting to breastfeed (Drs and Lactation
consulatants) and that they don't have a breastfeeding network of any sort
these being first children. They deserve for it to work well for them.
