The problem with asking abut CMV is that most people don't know if they have
ever had it, or have it now or not. People freak out when we have a baby in
our unit who has active CMV in their urine - when actually, for infection
control purposes - EVERY baby should be treated as though they have CMV
because we never know which ones do! There is no isolation necesssary,
universal precautions covers this. We do try not to assign preganant
caregivers to known CMV babies, but it is their responsibility to use
universal recautions for ALL babies. Although NICU is very different from a
home visit, or non NICU environment, Universal precaustions should apply
everywhere. Not just for the sake of the caregiver, but the sake of the
patients. With the right sized glove - lots of brands fit different, you
become accustomed to your sense of touch and they aren't in the way. That
can take awhile to get used to though. About the only thing I can't do with
gloves on now is tape an NG or OG tube - the tape likes the gloves better
than it likes the babys face! :)
