This is very interesting to me - my sister SWEARS that she never needed to be treated for thrush - only the baby was treated with gentian violet - and, she said "it worked just fine!" i tried to tell her about the research, and she thought I was crazy. (Her baby had thrush 21 years ago).

I totally believe in treating both mom and baby if only one of them has thrush symptoms. But, I have seen other cases besides my sister where only one was treated and the thrush went away.

It makes me wonder whether the widespread knowledge until recently was to treat only the one with the symptoms - whether it be the baby or the mother. It also makes me wonder - if many docs and intelligent people say that this worked - whether the need to treat "both" may, in fact, be due in part to the resistance in recent years of all "bugs" to be treated with standard drugs or remedies. (compare to strep throat now vs 25 or 35 years ago....) In any event, I would like to hear from anyone who had thrush or dealt with thrush say 25 or 35 years ago? Was there a difference in treatment then vs now?

Since I am a "newbie" in this field (relatively speaking), does anyone know when the current "treat both" recommendations were discovered?

This is really interesting to me. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Elaine Mazgelis, RD, IBCLC
