Kathleen and Pat,
As a sometimes NICU nurse and LC, I can't imagne any "current LC" not being
aware of the substantial body of research on preterm babies and
breastfeeding. Many, many moons ago...when I did full time NI bottle feeding
was the norm and perhaps this particular unit still is clinging to the old
ways. Old ways are hard to change. And I have found that nurses in this
intensive setting have a real hard time with letting believing in early BF
for premies or Kangaroo Care. It is important to always remember that these
little guys are all individual and without a good pro breastfeeding start you
run into the old problem of when will he/she ever gain enough to go home. So
Docs nurses, moms everyone, go the easiest route. I haven't worked with the
little tiny guys lately but the 34-35 weekers I've worked with do pretty
well. I would show moms the book on Kangaroo Care by S.Ludington and have
them go back to their neonatologist and talk about how much they would have
appreciated this experience.

Linda
