For BFHI we developed a new breastfeeding policy for our hospital which
is a large base hospital. One of the main aspects of this policy was
that any lactating mother or breastfed infant admitted anywhere in the
hospital was to be offered a referral to a lactation consultant.

This is not working perfectly yet, but when it does we get calls from
psych, surgical, medical, emergency, paeds, ENT, anywhere!

This enables the mother/child pair to have an advocate, support and
ongoing advice for their inevitable disruption to breastfeeding.
