Another bit of advice comes thusly:

<<instructed by the Pediatrician to nurse 10 minutes a side and then take
the
baby off and give him formula (even though she is getting overfull) because
he
will use too many calories to continue to breastfeed.>>

The thing that takes more calories is if you are trying to make the baby
wake up and then trying to make the baby latch on, and struggling and struggling
with the latch. Yes, that's more calories than just sticking the bottle in
the baby's mouth without even waking them up (and yes, I'm a good nursery
nurse, I can MAKE the baby take the bottle). BUT -- if the baby is latched and
feeding, according to the research that has been done on premie babies by
Paula Meier -- long ago, surely the neos know this is a classic?? -- it would
take less calories to comfortably breastfeed than bottle feed.

I think the idea has somehow settled into the national lexicon that it is
more "work" to breastfeed which is why babies prefer to bottle feed. It's only
more "work" if there is no milk there....it isn't more "work" if mom has a
good milk supply. And of course, when we "work" harder, we use more calories.

That, of course, depends on perspective. I "work" harder giving a lecture
than I ever do scrubbing a floor or vacuuming or washing windows or even
jogging (like that ever happens!!). I dare say I burn more calories doing
physical things than I ever do lecturing -- which is too bad.
