Here is another question. My son ( the same one who has thrush) had a
hernia operation about a week and a half ago. He is fine and even his
parents made it through ok. My question is this:
The hospital has an official policy of making babies (even 7 week old ones)
go without any food for six hours (!!!) before the surgery. I didn't find
out aobut this till just before the surgery and he had eaten about 3 1/2
hours earlier. I had understood from our surgeon that breastmilk was
counted like a clear liquid and they could nurse till three hours before
the surgery. The anesthesiologist told me that they had read some studies
which indicated that there is more fat in breastmilk than in formula and so
they don't want' kids getting breast milk 6 hours before surgery. I tried
to explain that the fat is breastmilk is easy to digest etc etc. She was
unconvinced. I would like to write to the chief of anestehesiology about this.
Can someone point me to some good articles on this issue that I can show him>
Six hours seems an awefully long time to ask an 8 lb 7 week old kid to go without food.
Please respond to my e-mail. Thanks,
