As regards skin testing for food allergies in the 7 Jan special issus
#2002-23, remember skin testing is flawed, esp. for foods. It is pretty
good for inhalants and contact allergens, but has never been perfected
for foods. Thus, a person may show positive for a food they have no
overt symptoms for and negative for a food they show symptoms for.
Having been through all the tests, shots, pills, etc. for 40+ years, I
do not trust the present-day testing system. I would tell the mother to
keep breastfeeding, eat in moderation and stay away from high allergenic
foods (eg. Seafood, nuts, milk, etc.) She has passed on the genetic
tendency for allergies, but that doesn't mean her child shouldn't have
the benefits of breastfeeding.
