Pam, I can certainly related to your frustrations.  I would direct you  first 
to Dr. Jack Newman's literature.  You may also try looking under Dr.  
Marianne Neifert for her work with normal weight loss.
I picked these two because they do not just look at the numbers.  They  
emphasize the importance of assessing the whole baby and situation.  What  does the 
baby look like?  Is the baby having frequent feedings, swallowing,  appears 
satisfied, not too jaundice and great outputs.............then the  weight loss 
does not fit the picture.  Weights have been known to be wrong  for many 
reasons.  If one finds that there appears to be a large weight  loss, this is a 
red flag to then evaluate the dyad.  
I have run into this many a time at work and then have the nurses point out  
uric crystals and dry lips as signs of dehydration.  I feel that I am just  
hitting my head against a wall when it comes to teaching.
