We have a (birth wt 1lb 12 oz, now at 2lb 3 oz at 3 weeks) preemie who is
solely on mom's milk. The md's have been very happy to have her provide milk
for her baby, who is still being tube - fed. However, they feel the need to add
fortifiers as weight gain seems to have stopped lately.

I have lots of questions. We did a "creamatocrit" of a single-pumping of the
mom (mostly for my curiosity, as I was wondering how I'd go about it in the
hospital setting we are in - how the lab would react, etc.). We used the
instructions in Lawrence (15 min in centrifuge). Results on two different moms
- 8.67 in the preemie mom's milk, 12 in milk of other NICU baby who is 3 lbs.

According to the formula in the book, the Kcal / L were 869.156 - and I think
this works out to 24 cal per oz ( if we did the math right). So, can this
information be used for the addition of the Human milk fortifier (what a
misnombre - there's nothing human in this!).

What would be the recommendations of you specialists? What additional info.
should we get - I realize the one-pumping result is not adequate, we'd need to
pool 24 hour samples, but what to do with the information? Baby is exceedingly
healthy - only needs to grow, according to the MD's.

Thanks for your help.
