Hi Faith,
If a baby did not have jaundice in the first week, and now has jaundice, this is indeed a medical problem. Baby needs to have total and direct bilirubin levels and physical exam, at least.
If baby had jaundice in the first week, either physiologic or late-onset (when milk came in) and now *still has jaundice* then this could be breastmilk jaundice, which is benign, but often takes several weeks to resolve. Doctors often will follow the bili levels, but the baby will be thriving and not sick. Breastfeeding does not need to be stopped or interrupted at all.
Depending on what the bili level is, and on how the baby is behaving and gaining, it may be that the doctor is not up to date on breastmilk jaundice, and mother may want a second opinion. I certainly would.
