I have found that breast hypertrophy is quite common in the newborn. It is
usually cause for concern among parents, particularly fathers who become
quite concerned at the thought of their sons having breasts. They just need
reassurance and should be told not to leave the breast alone. It resolves
on its own without treatment.

Newborn mastitis is usually due to Staph aureus and must be treated
vigorously and the infant evaluated for sepsis. Mastitis is more rare.

A good reference is: Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology 4th ed. Emans,
Laufer and Goldstein.
