Kirsten,
There are oxytocin receptors all along the ganglia and nerve fibers of the enteric nervous system.
Why wouldn't the mother's observations be accurate? There are numerous studies which observe
that oxytocin plays a role in gut motility, although most raise more questions than answers. I wonder
if heavy use of pit during labor could have triggered an odd response in the receptor sites--do you know
the history? My first thought would be that she needs her pituitary "adjusted" which can be done by a
chiro or CST trained to do so. May also be as simple as needing her diaphragm adjusted--this stops
reflux in babies all the time. Also--the last thing anyone with heartburn needs is less stomach acid--
it is usually a sign of too little stomach acid. And a need for magnesium and/or food allergies!!

"I have a question from a mom received over email, permission to post.
She asked me if there was a connection between oxytocin and increased
gastric secretions - which makes sense on a number of
neuro-physiological levels, though I can't pinpoint an exact pathway.
Has anyone else had experience with this?
HEre is text of her email to me:
I had run of the mill heartburn with both my pregnancies, but after I
had my son in September, I’ve experienced increasing, then debilitating
stomach pain from what seems to be acid production. After another
episode and a visit to urgent care in January, I was put on prilosec20and
zantac for a month which helped. It seems to be ramping up again as I’ve
been up with it in the middle of the night for the second night. I’ve
mentioned to my doctor that it seems to get worse after I nurse and I
get the skeptical look every time I mention the correlation to people,
which of course makes me feel like I’m nuts. It just doesn’t make sense
that I wake up before I nurse at night without a stomach ache then 10
minutes later, my son is done nursing and my stomach is tight and feels
like it’s getting a burning sensation. I don’t like taking a lot of
medicine, so I just don’t know if there’s ever been a case like this and
something else has been done. Of course I know I won’t BF forever, but I
did nurse my first for 2 years. I appreciate any insight you may have."

Thanks for any input,
Kirsten Berggren, PhD, RN, IBCLC, madly overworked NP student
