In this copyrighted article, only part of which is quoted here,
breastfeeding came in as the second factor listed in preventing SIDS:

HEADLINE: ADS FOCUS ON PREVENTING SUDDEN INFANT DEATH
AIM TO EDUCATE PARENTS ABOUT NEWLY DISCOVERED RISK FACTORS

BYLINE: The Associated Press

DATELINE: NEW BRUNSWICK

[Introduces a new campaign against SIDS...]

"I really believe that this campaign will make a true dent in the
incidence of SIDS deaths in New Jersey in the upcoming years," said Dr.
Thomas Hegyi, co-director of neonatology at St. Peter's Medical Center
in New Brunswick... The center recently began distributing
information through a home page on the World Wide Web...

At the top of the list is tobacco smoke. Pregnant women should
abstain from smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, and parents should keep
infants out of smoky environments.

"If women refrained from smoking while pregnant, up to 30 percent of
SIDS might be prevented," Hegyi said, quoting from a June 1995 article
in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Other advice: Breast-feed and do not overheat the infant with too
many clothes or blankets. Get regular prenatal care, which can detect
problems such as anemia that limit how much oxygen reaches the baby
through the umbilical cord.

And when the baby sleeps, he or she should never be laid on the
stomach or on any type of soft bedding or fluffy blankets....

...[article goes on]

The campaign began last week when the first billboards went up along
New Jersey highways. Featuring the slogan "Prevent Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome" and a stop sign with the word SIDS in white letters, the signs
list the main risky behaviors to avoid...

Along with similar ads on buses and trains, the yearlong campaign
includes brochures and bumper stickers to be distributed through
obstetricians, pediatricians, visiting nurses, clinics, and high
schools.

It will be great if breastfeeding is listed on all of its materials in the
same prominence as it was listed in this article!
