I'm behind on Lactnet so perhaps someone has already responded to this.
There is indeed a persistent rumor that other countries define infant
mortality differently than in the U.S. but this is absolutely not true.
All countries reporting infant mortality to international bodies use the
exact same criteria. Academics who study infant mortality worldwide have
long been puzzled by this persistent rumor and have been unable to trace
its origins. But, I can assure you, it is a myth. The U.S. truly is
right next door to Latvia in its infant mortality rate. The U.S. does
not define "infant mortality more broadly than many other countries do."
