Just saw one of my most dedicated and frustrated moms.

Baby #1 - vaginal delivery, usual (for PR) interventions, bottle given
after birth and separation.
Went to an LC for help as baby was clamping and not breastfeeding well.
low weight gain.

Tried suck training and feeding with a periodontal syringe (5 years ago -
had no Hazelbaker feeder), SNS starter set to see if clamping would reduce
if milk just flowed - not really.

Mom finally quit bf at 8 weeks due to pain and frustration with low weight
gain.

Baby #2 - vaginal delivery, few medications during delivery, separation
from baby so that she assumed bottles were given, came to see me at 1 week.

Clamping VERY strong, we have no one with Cranio-sacral therapy training
that I can locate here in PR. I try suck training, cup feeding,
positioning, etc. The situation was a little less horrible, but never did
she enjoy feeds - they were painful. baby was very slow weight gain. Mom
quit at 6 months...

Baby #3 - Delivered with Demerol, but baby was in nursery less than 2 hours
and I got her back to mom before any bottles were given. DARN - baby
clamped just like the others.

Mom just came to my office for evaluation. Nipples are OK, but only
because she pulled out the old nipple shields after she got home and
decided to protect them before they got damaged like the last two times.
Intake during feed was 1 ounce (day 4, 15 minutes, baby let go). Mom
feeling desperate - has two others to contend with now, and lots of stress
from family asking her if she plans to let this one get as skinny as older
siblings.

IS there an inherited "bite mom" gene? HELP.
