Blood calcium levels should stay constant, and be unaffected by diet and lactation. Thyroid and parathyroid hormones influence blood calcium levels and movement of calcium into and out of bone. Abnormal blood calcium levels are nothing to mess around with, and this mom would need a medical work-up asap if her blood calcium levels were low. Any physician would not mess around here if they really thought that low calcium was the problem. My guess would be that this was a knee jerk reaction without much thought given. Additionally, lots of other things can cause "palpitations" and leg cramps - exhaustion altered sleep patterns, for one. Stress, caffeine and a host of other fairly innocuous things could appear like this.
