Hello all (Dr. Hale??)

Has anyone had experience with Behcet's Syndrome? This is an autoimmune
disease just diagnosed in a mother who is happily breastfeeding her 9 mos.
old (nurses about 5 times a day and is on three meals of solids). She has
been told that if eyedrops don't reduce the inflammation in her eyes she will
have to go on oral doses of Prednisone and Colchicine. Without the
medication there is the threat of permanent loss of vision.

She told me that Colchicine is a "cytotoxic" drug - that it kills growing
cells and for that reason she has been told it is contraindicated for
breastfeeding. In Dr. Hale's book it is listed as an Analgesic not
contraindicated. Ruth Lawrence also lists this drug as usually compatible
with breastfeeding.

Is the mother's information incorrect? Is this medication absolutely
contraindicated for any amount of breastfeeding. If any of you have any
experience with any aspect of this I would very much appreciate your input.
   Thank you so much.
