I'm wondering if anyone has any information on the use of the term small gape with breastfeeding infants and their ability to latch with a wide open latch. The angle of their mouth seems to be what this is referring to. I could not find mention of this in any lactation reference book. I believe this is different than having a mismatch of a mother with large nipples and baby with a small mouth, which I do see happen occasionally. Is this term small gape evidence based? I could only find one article by an ENT, not an IBCLC about this. Would love any references and thoughts.

Thanks so much,

Tricia Shamblin
