Hi everyone!

I am very concerned about the notion that a pump should NOT be used for
ANY reason during the ENTIRE first month. I do not know who created that
concept, but I have heard women tell me both locally and in other areas that their
hospital nurse very clearly told them this. I am trying to find out where
this idea came from, since it appears to be very widespread. I work with several
corporate lactation programs throughout the U.S., and it has been told to me
a number of times by different mothers in different locations.

I have seen some serious cases with mothers who took it as gospel. The
most serious was a case in Atlanta, GA. This mother would not use a pump
because her hospital nurse told her no pump for a month. I was trying to convince
her otherwise by phone. This woman went beyond mastitis to breast abscess.

Perhaps mothers are misinterpreting because a number of us recommend
NO bottle for the first month. I am just curious if others have heard this
from their moms.

I am in no way trying to condemn any nurse or LC who does say no
pumping for the first month. I just hope that you can see the repercussions
involved in emergency cases. Also, please recognize that many women work,
sometimes as early as 6 weeks, and it would be helpful for these moms to have a
surplus milk supply before they go back to work.
