Kathy asks:
One of the hospitals in town recently implemented a new hypoglycemia

protocol. EVERY baby has a bedside glucose checked at 30 MINUTES OF

AGE, and if it is <40 they must have an ENTIRE OUNCE (30cc) of
formula.
Approximately 25% of babies are receiving this.
.........
Mostly I am interested in knowing if this is happening anywhere
else...if not, I can add that noone else in the WORLD is doing this!

Unfortunately, you can't say noone else is doing it! At the
hospital I worked at intervention was required if if was below 45!
Only babies with one of the named risk factors were routniely tested
and it was at birth, at one hour and at three hours of age. If it
fell between 35 and 45 and baby was not symptomatic, mom could nurse
first (but there was impatience for her to "get on with it" rather
than letting baby do it). If the blood sugar was over 45 a half
hour after nursing it was OK, but if not, then formula had to be
given. The amount would vary widely between nurses.
