I've had a question that I cannot answer accurately. I do thinkto know , but
can't give a good, evidence based explanation.
A LLL leader asked me about a baby of 9 weeks old that already gained
3000grams, with an average of around 400gr a week. Doc is concerned that this is a
warning for an abese child and adult and wants to "do something about that
breastgfeeding".
Now, it always has been my understanding that obesity or what seems to be
obesity in an exclusively breastfed infant does not have this increased risk for
being obese for ever (as is definitely so for formula fed infants). Rationale
for breastfeeding thickish children not being endangered is that "breastmilk
baby fat" is thouhgt to be metobolised different from "formula baby fat".
But how scientifically true is this? Where is the research to back this up,
if there is?
