With regards to sushi ( since I am a nursing mother and personal sushi addict) there are many kinds of sushi including vegetarian and cooked shellfish such as crab and shrimp. If eating the sashimi and raw fish sushi, it is traditionally served with pickled ginger slices as that is believed to be an antiseptic aid for digestion.
In my area, cooked local fish seems to offer more chances for illness than sushi.
In my breastfeeding and childbirth classes I suggest the vegetarian sushi rolls ( which are delicious and just as traditional) if it makes the mother more comfortable or if she cannot find an answer she is comfortable with from her care provider.
