Well I just can not keep out of this discussion anymore. I agree that the first
24 hrs. are too overwhelming for most mothers to start pumping. There are 2
reasons why I feel that pumping must start by 24 hrs. 1) We know that when a
mother has a sleepy feeder, she is much more likely to have more problems with
engorgement. I want to make sure the mother doesn't have to deal with
engorgement along with a baby that doesn't know what a breast is used for. 2)
This mother has to deal with a lot of emotional garbage. Her baby was to come
out knowing how to do this breastfeeding thing, and now he doesn't. This gives
the mother something positive to do for her baby and tells her that her sweety
will learn and this is what we do until he figures it out. I keep things low
key by telling her that she can slowly bring in her milk more comfortably and
learn about her baby. We Have Time.
