Any time someone *else* can't turn around a situation like this, I immediately see a single, small candle trying to light a vast, dark room. Of *course* it can't be done. I'm never able to see *myself* as that single, small candle, but I know intellectually that it must be the same. One voice is simply not enough for the women who have had many voices and experiences, over many years, dragging them firmly in a different direction. Besides, if it were really all that important (she can say to herself, quite logically), wouldn't the encouraging voices - the lights - be all around her?

The point about past abuse is an excellent one. Statistically, we must all have seen it without always recognizing it.
