One of the theories about what caused the polio epidemic in the 1950s in the
US is that people cleaned up too much, and children were not exposed to the
polio virus in early childhood and therefore had a severe reaction to the
disease when they contacted it an an earlier age.  Just like getting the
chicken pox or measles as an adult.
