"I am talking with a woman in Canada who is wondering whether it is safe to
use estrogen following a hysterectomy, while breastfeeding."

I am a nurse-midwife in Milwaukee, WI and prescribe estrogen to women in my
practice, usually for menopausal symptoms. The amount of estrogen used
post-hysterectomy is one-fourth to one-third the amount found in current
oral contraceptives; I really doubt it will have any negative impact on
BF. Keep in mind that there are many serious problems associated with
estrogen deficit, particularly in a young woman. Without estrogen she
risks severe bone loss, increased risk of heart disease, sleep disturbance
from hot flashes, etc. This is clearly a situation where known benefits
far outweigh any hypothetical risks of decreased milk supply, etc. I hope
this helps.
