The author of the AAP's book knew nothing about this. Bantam (publisher)
approached the AAP originally to have this book written, and the author and AAP
BF staff worked with Bantam to write it, and to get it right. The AAP's work
group on breastfeeding and LLL all agreed it is a good book, and it is already
in the LLL catalog.

As has been said before, this Ross thing is a brand new wrinkle. The AAP, not the
author, owns the book. The publisher, Bantam, and the AAP are free, legally, to
do what they want. The author knew nothing about it. Three weeks ago in Tucson
at the LLL/AAP physician seminar the book was displayed, and I heard privately
from Betty Crase (of both LLL and AAP-- 40 yrs with LLLI, and about 5? with the
AAP) about how it came to be written and published, and a little about that
learning curve for Bantam. No one from either LLL or AAP at the Tucson meeting
had an inkling.

All of this happened behind the scenes between Ross, Bantam, and the AAP. The
author, AAP's work group, Betty Crase, etc., had nothing to do with it. I know
Betty is upset, that's why I originally asked you to leave her alone.

The left hand (AAP's Work Group on Breastfeeding) had nothing to do with the
right hand (publications and marketing arms of the AAP) We haven't heard yet
from the author, but I'm sure she is extremely upset. I am deliberately leaving
out the author's name from this note, although it is readily available, because
I want to minimize any further flaming of the wrong people.

I wish that instead of turning this into an angry attack on author, Betty, or
even AAP marketing, that we would all please calm down, and address for the AAP
the ethical issues, given them a good education about marketing in general,
about the relationship between Ross and AAP, about the WHO code, etc. Even the
marketing people at AAP I'm sure are good, well-meaning people, who simply
operate in a different paradigm. Their experience isn't yours. Fill them in.

Approaching anyone with self-righteous anger is a good way to get your emails
dismissed and deleted without finishing the read.

Please review Elisheva Urbas's suggestions for writing a good letter, posted by
Sara Demmon yesterday (SUBJECT: "complaint letters #2") and approved for posting
by Elisheva a little later (SUBJECT: "model letter for protesting")
