Hi Susie,
Tape some commercials one night -- you'll be bound to
see several which promote certain medications for
certain conditions.  Show the tape to the docs and ask
what they are doing about drug companies direct
marketing.  Why is it ok for them to talk about drugs
to patients?  They do state at the end of the
commercials to talk with your physician to see if this
med is suitable for your situation.

Type up a list of internet sites at which any person
with a computer can look up info on meds.  Ask what
they are doing to shut these sites down.  Are these
sites prescribing meds by providing info?  These sites
all have a disclaimer which tells you to discuss the
info with your physician.

Perhaps you can have each person you talk to sign a
disclaimer which states that you are only providing
info on meds and not directing that they take any
specific meds and that they should consult with their
physician.  If that is their objection, such a
disclaimer should satisfy them.  But I suspect that is
only an excuse.

In any case,
The IBLCE on their website has the list of competency
statements -- the pertinent ones that I see are:

"4.     Integrate cultural, psychosocial, nutritional,
and pharmacological aspects of breastfeeding into
lactation consultant practice."

and

"6.     Maintain a collaborative, supportive
relationship with clients, emphasizing individualized
family care, client autonomy, informed decision
making, and optimal health care."

We are *supposed* to integrate pharmacological aspects
of breastfeeding into our patient care and we are
*supposed* to emphasize informed decision making. 
That means that if we are a competent IBCLC we are
expected to give medication information when necessary
to our clients to help them make an informed decision.
 We don't make the decisions for them, but we do
provide information.  As you do, I would always follow
the information up with a recommendation to discuss it
with their physician.

Maybe showing the docs the list of competencies would
help them see you are not "prescribing".  The website
