Friends, think the idea of shields has been discussed at length here. there
are many uses for these handy devices. Used on last week on a large but
premature baby mom had somewhat lowered supply, but pumping and an inverted
nipple that this baby had just a little difficulty latching. The Doc wanted
an SNS but we used the simple with before the expensive, even after watching
a feed, discussing all pros and cons of both devices. We had a very
difficult time waking baby. With the shield the first successful latch and
feed after two weeks of trying nursing and the bottle feeding. Moms
conficence was quite boosted that this one could get milk and that she made
enough.

Now we are doing close follow up and helping the supply by increased pumping
and herbs. They worked in 24 hrs she was shocked, quite pleasantly. We are
still following up. Still using herbs and will eventually wean to straight
breastfeeding. The on nipple may always have to have the shield but she is
nursing and happy.

One good note the other nurse that does breastfeeding at the hospital was
mentioned as help, the doc said you need someone who is Board Certified.
that did please me. At least that is what the mother reported. The shield
is a tool that if used properly is an asset if not- just watch Home
Improvement.
